July 1, 1908 - Cubs win, killer molasses, and hey ... look ... black people!

The Cubs snapped a two game losing streak beating Cincinnati 5-1. Meanwhile, molasses kills, and racially uncomfortable news headlines are back again!

Ed Reulbach has been a hoss the past couple weeks for the Cubs, especially with ace Mordecai Brown being MIA during that time while dealing with the illness and passing of his mother. So here's Big Ed pulling down another nice win, which by the way today is on two days rest.

Meanwhile in 2016 we've got guys like Steven Strasburg needing a freakin' six man rotation just to "only" end up on the DL once or twice a season.

Reulbach scattered a measly two hits, struck out three, and only gave up one run in the 7th, giving the Cubs a much needed victory in the eighth and final game in the marathon series with the Reds.

By the way ... Ed is going to do something this season in September that has NEVER been done by another player ever. Not before. Not after. Never. (That's me throwing down a tease of what's to come right there!)

On offense, the Cubs swiped six stolen bases and used that small ball to then take advantage of multiple errors by the Reds defense, led by catcher Larry McLean. But hey ... I'm giving ol' Larry a pass since he did get hit in the throat with a foul ball just yesterday and didn't even get a day's rest today for his troubles.

In other news ... and actually I should point out FRONT PAGE news ... a cow got a bucket of molasses stuck on his head and died. Yup ... some poor cow in Terre Haute, IN found themselves a delicious bucket of molasses, only to have that tin bucket get stuck on their face and choke them to death. Killer molasses! And yes ... again worth mentioning that this was FRONT PAGE news.

Also in the news today ... more uncomfortably racist headlines! Whoopie!

Good Lord I cannot even fathom the storm cloud of outrage that would've gone down in 1908 if social media existed. Granted, that would be a hell of a lot of technology to be happening at a time where the telephone was still a pretty new thing. Not to mention the fact that all the retro filters on Instagram would simply be called "today" when you tried to use them. (Rimshot!)

So here's your highly questionable headline of the day from the sports pages ...

"Colored Cracks Are Coming"

Oh my!

Shoot ... I feel like I'm gonna get in trouble for even typing that in 2016! But I'm just here to bring you the throwback facts of the day. So don't hate the player ... hate the game!

Now what they mean in that headline is the Negro League team the Cuban Giants will be in town for a 4th of July game against a team from southside Chicago. And here's your brief history lesson ... the Giants were America's very first African-American baseball team, having formed in 1885. Also ... there were never really any Cubans on the team (nor giants like the ones you see on Game of Thrones).

And in other news ... they did not particularly enjoy smiling for team pictures ...

In conclusion ... the Cubs win put them at 38-23 on the year. Pittsburgh was idle again for their THIRD day off in a row (yeah that seems fair), so their lead is now just a half game over the Cubs. We now get the showdown between the two ... six games over the next fours days for the Cubbies in the Steel City.
