Today in 1908 - Cubs pounded, rich lady buys too many dresses

The Cubs got pounded by the Pirates 7-0 to fall a game and a half out of first. Also, so rich lady bought too many dresses. Husband laughs.

A pretty lousy showing by the Cubs today on a hot, humid day in Pittsburgh. The Tribune reporter said that the weather "felt loose and sticky like a poached egg," which sounds about as fun as a kid's birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese. Orval Overall gave up three runs, then Carl Lundgren came in and gave up four more.

As you can imagine by the final, the Cubs did very little to celebrate today. The only person I'll give props to was catcher Pat Moran. Sure, he went 0-4, but he also played in this game with what sounds like a horribly gruesome shin injury. Moran got spiked in the shin a while back, and returned today with what was described as "a chunk of boiler iron riveted to an infected shin." I don't know about you, but that sounds like some sort of medieval form of torture that they would do to each other in Game of Thrones. Ouch!

In other news, some rich lady had to go to court after spending all her money on fancy dresses. The wife of Chicago railroad President William E. Phillips had to appear in court to settle a debt of $1,200 to a local dress maker, part of about $3,000 worth of purchases she had made over time. Just to give you perspective, the average worker in 1908 made about $200-$400 a year. So those were some expensive-ass dresses!

So anyway, 1908 Beyonce didn't pay her bill, so the dress maker took her to court. Actually, "1908 Beyonce" is a bad comparison, because Beyonce makes her own money and can totally afford all the bling she buys. This is more like "1908 Real Housewives of New Jersey," because the wife had no job, and admitted in court that she "receives an allowance of $200 a month" from her husband.

And in more #FirstWorldProblems, Mrs. Phillips said she was so nervous about having to appear in court, she didn't even have the appetite to eat her breakfast. Awwww ... poor baby!!!!

What I found interesting is the court ruled in favor of the dress maker, but instead of making the rich lady return the dresses, she was allowed to keep them and had to give the dress maker some of her jewelry instead. I'm not sure how that works, but I guess the dress maker was happy to get anything.

Oh and in case you're wondering, where was Mr. Phillips in all of this? Home laughing at his wife. In fact, he laughed in her face when she told him she had to go to court in the first place, which she said made her feel "more miserable than before." Ahhh love!

Here's our rich little friend ...

In conclusion, the Cubs loss drops them to 39-25 and a game and a half out of first place. A 4th of July doubleheader against the Pirates is on tap tomorrow, and you'll be happy to know that police told the Cubs they would do their best to limit the amount of "pistols and cannons" that get shot off at the game. Fun fun!
