A late rally from a 5-1 deficit fell just short, and the Cubs dropped today's game 5-4. Meanwhile, food is being ruined with bad recipes.
I should start by mentioning that the biggest news of the day in 1908 was the Democratic National Convention, which was going on right now in Denver. But honestly, talking about politics in 1908, 2016, or 3012 is about as much fun as jamming a pencil in your eye. So I ain't gonna talk about it! (Spoiler alert: The Democrat loses anyway.)
On to baseball!
The Cubs put up a valiant effort, but a late rally fell short and the game ended with Chicago losing to Brooklyn 5-4. Down 5-1 in the seventh, the Cubs managed to put three on the board thanks to a two run triple from pinch hitter Doc Marshall. Unfortunately for the Cubs, Marshall immediately joined the list of the walking wounded by hurting his ankle sliding into third. The Cubs were already without Evers, Kling, Chance, and Slagle for this game, so things pretty much keep getting worse as the injury bug bites again.

Chick Fraser gave up all five Brooklyn runs, but resident badass Mordecai Brown made a relief appearance and shut the Superbas down the rest of the way, at least giving the Cubs a chance at a comeback. The Cubs managed to get the first two guys on base in the 9th inning, but couldn't do anything from there and lost 5-4.
In other news, recipes in 1908 were terrible. I mean like worse than what Guy Fieri would churn out on a typical episode of Guy's Big Bite. THAT terrible! Here's a hot recipe from the paper today for what's being called "Potted Beef" ...
According to the directions, you take chunks of beef round (a.k.a. "the cheap ass part of the cow"), and wrap it in a piece of bacon. You then brown the bacon-wrapped beef in some butter for a couple a minutes. Everything seems pretty good so far. I'll even give you a pass on the low grade cut of beef we're using, but here's where you lose me ...
The next step is to boil the chunks in hot water for an hour and a half. Then plate and serve, topping with some of the watery gravy that has formed. Um ... tasty?
I don't know about you, but I like my bacon crispy and delicious, not soggy and limp like it would be after boiling in water for 90 minutes. This cannot possibly taste good.
Though after some thought, it's still probably better than this ...

If I ever end up in Flavortown, please kill me.
In summary, the Cubs loss drops them to 41-27. Also, Pittsburgh won today, so the Cubs fall to a game and a half out of first. Game two of the three game series with Brooklyn is tomorrow.
