The Cubs beat Brooklyn today 6-3, and thanks to Pittsburgh losing both games of a doubleheader are now in first place. Meanwhile, go ahead and rub some acid on it.
Another day, another badass performance by Mordecai Brown. The dude is the Cubs' best starter. He also pitched in relief in the last game and shut down the Dodgers while he was in the game, and then comes in to today's game yet again. This time to knock down a save. Granted, he game up a run, but it was also the first run he surrendered in four games. So yeah ... he's pretty freakin' good.
[[Editor's note: I'm calling the Brooklyn team "Dodgers" from now on. Officially, they're listed as the "Superbas," but plenty of people called them the Dodgers back then, so I'm doing it too.]]]
Ed Reulbach held the Dodgers to two runs, but then walked the bases loaded in the 8th. So what do you do if you're the Cubs manager? You make Three Finger get the heck out there and pitch as much as possible, that's what! Brownie got them out of the 8th unscathed, but gave up a relatively pointless run in the 9th and held on for the save. Yup ... he goes 29-9 for the year, but also knock down five saves. Badass!
This was a big win for the Cubs because they were again without all their injured players, and managed to capitalize on the Pirates losing both games of their doubleheader to Philadelphia. Hello first place!

On offense, Solly Hofman went 2-4 with a home run and an adorable kid named ... well ... Kid went 2-4 as well. That kid would be 21 year old Kid Durbin, called into action to take over for one of the many walking wounded on the Cubs roster. (For the record I refuse call them "the cripples" like the Tribune keeps doing.)
In other news of the day, the "women's" section of the paper had some awesome advice for sweaty hands. Just rub some acid on it! That's right ladies, if you suffer from cold, clammy hands all you need to do is "dip the palms into very hot water and after drying then rub dry boracic acid into them."
In case you're wondering, boracic acid is also known as boric acid, also known as "cockroach repellant." So yeah ... just rub some cockroach poison on your hands. That'll totally work!
In summary ... the win puts the Cubs at 42-27 on the year, and thanks to the two Pittsburgh losses they are now also tied for first place. One final game against Brooklyn tomorrow, followed by six games against the visiting Phillies.
