The Cubs snapped their five game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the Giants, a victory so exciting a fan fell off a roof while watching the game.
Well well well ... the Cubs FINALLY throw one in the win column after losing five straight and six of their last seven. The lone tally of the game came on an inside-the-park home run in the 5th inning by Joe Tinker.
Tinker crushed a line drive over the head of shortstop Al Bridwell, which was struck hard enough to then shoot the gap between left and center and roll into the massive abyss that was West Side Park, which was a staggering 560 feet to center field.
No wonder nobody hit many home runs in 1908! Shoot ... even Giancarlo Stanton's power display at the Home Run Derby this year wouldn't be enough to get it out of centerfield in that canyon of a ballpark.
Heinie Zimmerman was coaching third on this day and actually gave Tinker the stop sign as he was rounding third. Tinker, however, blew him off and slid safely into home when the relay throw from the outfield was wide right. And certainly worth noting that home runs were such a big deal in 1908, a player was given a $25 suit, a $5 check, a new hat, some shoes, and a tasty jar of pig's knuckles (I'm not making this up). So Ol' Heinie darn near cost his teammate a big pile of booty!
(Editor's Note: See what I did there? Heinie ... Booty ... Genius! And yes, I thoroughly apologize for doing that.)
This is not THE home run from Tinker on this day, but it is A homer from Tinker in 1908 (check back in October to hear more details on this one) ...

This home run was such a big deal, some kid watching the game from a nearby rooftop fell three stories to the ground while watching the play unfold. 14 year-old William Hudson didn't have a ticket to the game, and instead climbed a nearby building to watch the game . (Think of him as the Founding Father of Wrigleyville Rooftops!)
Unfortunately for young William, in the excitement of the play, he forgot he was standing on the ledge of a roof, and stepped forward and plummeted 50 feet to the ground. Even more unfortunate for him was that the play on the field was so exciting, nobody in stands noticed him laying there unconscious for several minutes. Poor kid!
(Side note: He was injured pretty bad, but did recover. OK ... full disclosure I don't know if he fully recovered since he cracked his skull and that's all the Tribune said about it, but we're all gonna think happy thoughts and pretend he grew up just fine.)
On the mound, the crowd was treated to a badass pitcher's duel between two legends ... Three Finger Brown and Christy Mathewson. That's a showdown for the ages right there! Even more badass was the Three Finger guaranteed victory before the game, basically pulling the pitcher's version of calling your own shot. Brown naturally went the distance, scattering six hits and striking out one.

In summary ... the Cubs needed this win badly, moving to 46-33 on the year. Pittsburgh also lost today, so Chicago now only trailed both them and the Giants by a single game. One last game of the series tomorrow against the Giants, then four final games of the long home stand against Boston.
