The Cubs are off today but prepare for a crucial 11 game stretch on the road against Philly, New York, and Pittsburgh. Also, terrible baseball fields and raunchy bathing suits.
The Cubs face a huge set of games in the coming week and a half ... eleven road games against the other three top teams in the league in Philadelphia, New York, and Pittsburgh. And I'll give away at least a little bit of what's gonna happen ... times are about to get tough. Now, you and I both know that this all ends will in October, but things are gonna look pretty gloom and doom here in the next two weeks. Hooray!
That said, even with a slump on the horizon, at least you didn't fall in a mine shaft! When I see stories like this it, 1) Blows my mind, and 2) Makes me realize that being alive in 2016 isn't as horrible as some people wanna make it out to be. I mean really, Facebook is just a cesspool of people whining and complaining about their lives who should be downright grateful that they live in a time where kids don't falls down mine shafts while playing baseball, and instead in a time where they can whine on social media while hanging out in their comfy, air conditioned homes.
On this day in 1908, 12 year old Willie Rainey was playing in a baseball game like many kids do on a summer night. It was bottom of the 9th with two outs and two runners on, and the batter hit a rocket to deep center. Young Willie, playing center, took off like a shot toward the ball, leapt up in the air, caught the ball, AND FELL INTO AN ABANDONED COAL MINE!!!
Who the F*%$ put a baseball field somewhere where there was an abandoned coal mine in the damn outfield?????

Why is this in the outfield?
Poor Willie fell down the shaft, broke his leg, suffered internal injuries, and the Tribune reported was fighting for his life after being fished out of the mine. Honestly ... I don't even wanna look it up and find out if he made it. I'm so sad for him, I'm gonna just pretend he pulled through and lived a long happy life.
Again ... what jackass put this field with a damn death hole in the outfield?!?
Hey if nothing else, it should be pointed out that when they fished Willie's body out of the mine, he still had the ball in his glove. Props to you, dammit!!
And if that wasn't enough to make you happy that you are alive in 2016 instead of 1908, lets also point out that bathing suits were downright awful back then. I'm pretty sure the definition of "sexy" in 1908, is the 2016 equivalent of "lamest person you've ever met." And as a long-time fan of the bathing suit and all the glory it provides, I'm definitely happy I didn't live in 1908 where people were arrested for swimming in the water with "illegal" bathing suits.
That's exactly what happened on this day in 1908 when two vacationers in Mobile, Alabama were arrested for indecency despite wearing what they thought were "regulation" bathing suits. That's all I need to know. The fact alone that there were "regulation" bathing suits tells me that things were straight up LAME back then. No thanks! In celebration, I'm just gonna go on Instagram and looks at the people I'm following that are currently on vacation at the beach. God bless you 2016!

Not bringing sexy back
Anyway ... no change in the record or standings today since the whole NL was off. The four game series with the Phillies starts tomorrow.
