The Cubs won a pointless exhibition game today 5-1 against Waterbury, CT. Also, the worst salad ever and homemade underwear
The Cubs win a game ... finally!
OK ... let me rephrase that ...
The Cubs win an exhibition game ... yay?
So while nursing a four game losing streak on a long road trip, and with upcoming games against second place New York followed by first place Pittsburgh, the Cubs were forced on their day off to travel 100 miles to Connecticut to play Waterbury in an exhibition game. Awful idea!
The Tribune tried to put a positive spin on it, saying that it was allowing the Cubs to "get back to their winning ways." I totally disagree. I think it all it does is wear out a group of players that are already totally gassed and need a day off.
And all you really need to do is look at the results of the upcoming week and you'll realize that I'm right in this situation, and a day off probably would've been a good idea.
I'm not going to bother bogging down your day with details from a game that didn't actually count for anything, but the Cubs did win 5-1. One play of note came courtesy of center fielder Jimmy Slagle, who made a spectacular one-handed catch that partially happened because he was only half paying attention.
It seems Jimmy was hankerin' for a fresh piece of gum and had dug his hand into his back pocket to pull one out ... right as the ball was hit. As it sailed over his head, Slagle scrambled toward the ball, but was unable to free his hand from his pocket, forcing him to throw up one hand in desperation and somehow make an amazing catch (that probably didn't have to be as difficult as he made it).

I like gum.
In other news, say hello to the worst salad of your life ... The Tomato Jelly Salad!
OK, this one is causing me to make "yucky face" just thinking about it, but today's Tribune recipe for the ladies featured such a concoction. So just mix a little tomato and gelatin, slice it into squares, and serve it with lettuce, celery, and mayonnaise for ... gulp ... tomato jelly salad.
Oh dear lord I think I need some Pepto Bismol already ...

Do not want.
By the way, there were also some hot tips for ladies who wanted to make their own underwear. As the Tribune points out "the more billowy and airy an undergarment, the more it is appreciated and longed for by adoring women."
Hey baby ... put on that airy and billowy pair I love so much ... it's date night!

Bringing Not-Sexy Back
Back to baseball that counts tomorrow as the Cubs return to New York for the tough task of facing Giants ace and future Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson.
