The Cubs dropped their second straight to Philly with a 1-0 loss to fall six games out of first. But on the bright side ... this is rock bottom and it's all on the up and up from here!
Yup ... here it is. Rock bottom.
And while rock bottom is not something any of us ever hope to hit, the one good thing about hitting it, is that there is nowhere to go but UP from there. And today, my friends, is the rock bottom of the 1908 Cubs season.
Phillies ace George McQuillan fired a one-hit shutout against the hapless Cubs on a sweltering hot day that only saw four combined hits by both teams. Fortunately for the Phillies, two of theirs came back to back in the second when Sherry Magee, who's name sounds like that pretty girl who hangs out at the soda shop that all the boys wanna date, laced a double down the left field line. Kitty Bransfield, who sounds like Sherry's bad news friend who smokes cigarettes and goes all the way with boys, then drove a line drive to center to score the only run of the day.
With names like that, I suddenly feel like I'm watching the old Grease movie or something ...

We're the Phillies!
Regardless, the Cubs couldn't do anything on this day ... much like many of the days during their recent slump. Things got so bad that player-manager Frank Chance even benched himself today to try to get something going. I guess technically he made a good move since his replacement, Solly Hofman, got the only hit for the Cubs on the day.

I stink!
About the only good news on the day was that first place Pittsburgh didn't play, so the Cubs only fell a half game in the standings ... now six games from the top. But again ... remember ... BRIGHT SIDE! This is as bad as things get all year ... now we get to dig in and watch a spectacular August and September run unfold!
Who's ready to start Flying the W????
