August 25, 1908: Cubs crush Brooklyn 10-2 for their 4th straight win. Also, never trust old ladies

The Cubs are officially on a roll, crushing the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 10-2, their 4th win in a row against the visiting Superbas. Ed Reulbach got the call to take the mound for the Cubs today, and things actually started off a little shaky.

Dodger first baseman and 1908 National League home run king Tim Jordan blasted a two run homer in the first to give Brooklyn an early 2-0 lead. (In case you're wondering, Jordan's "massive" tally for the season to lead the league is 12. We've still got about ten more years to wait before the true home run king, Babe Ruth, starts his magic with the Red Sox.)

I'm as "Home Run King" as you get right now

Reulbach settled down from there, allowing no more runs on the day, and the Cubs offense took over. Reulbach himself got the scoring started with a triple in the 5th inning. Big Ed then scored on a Jimmy Sheckard fly ball to cut Brooklyn's lead in half.

Then in the 6th inning, everything fell apart for Dodgers pitcher George Bell. Jimmy Sheckard got things started with a triple, and he then scored on a single by Frank Schulte. After that, Bell completely lost it and walked the next three batters before getting the hook by manager Patsy Donovan. It really isn't THAT much a surprise though, since Bell ended up with a terrible 4-15 record on the season.

I am really bad

Nap Rucker took over next for the Dodgers and did no better, allowing the Cubs to score three more runs in the inning on their way to a 10-2 rout. Jimmy Sheckard led the offensive charge going 3-4, and pitcher Ed Reulbach helped himself with two hits on the day as well.

The fifth and final game of the series against the Dodgers will take place tomorrow as the Cubs look to make it five in a row. It'll be the final game Chicago plays against Brooklyn on the season, which is a crying shame since the Cubs are 14-4 against Dem (Future) Bums for the year.

In other news, ever trust old ladies! Here's what I mean by that ... I think lots of old ladies out there play the "oh I'm just a sweet old lady" game with you as a way to trick you, lower your guard, and take advantage of you.

I'm plotting against you, Sonny

Think about ... how many times in your life have you seen an old lady at the store straight up cut the line, and then play the whole, "Oh I didn't know there was a line! I'm just a confused old lady who doesn't know any better ... mind if I just pay for these cans of cat food so I can be on my way?"

It's a scam! That old lady knows EXACTLY what she's doing, and now your young whipper snapper butt is busy waitin' in line while she's laughing all the way back to an afternoon of Murder, She Wrote reruns.

In 1908, a 74 year old woman by the name of Mrs. A. Graham was arrested for shoplifting after she was caught in a department store trying to stuff a cheap shirt underneath her jacket (which she was wearing in August by the way ... totally shady).

After getting caught and arrested, Mrs. Graham pleaded, "I'm praying that I will be spared the disgrace of a court hearing. Surely my age will cause the judge to be merciful."

There's the scam again!!! "Oh I'm just an innocent old lady, you can't actually keep me in jail, I'm too old!" Too bad grandma ... your crime spree is OVER! (Full disclosure: I have no idea what actually happens to her. My guess is she probably successfully works the Old Lady Scam and goes right back to her shady life of old lady crime.)

So consider this a cautionary tale that next time some "innocent" old lady tries to pull one over on YOU!

Who ... ME?

Back to baseball ... the Cubs win puts them at 61-46 on the year. The Giants beat the Pirates again, so they now take a one game lead over Pittsburgh for first. Meanwhile, the Cubs remain three and a half back, but do at least gain a game on the second place Pirates. The fifth and final game with the Dodgers is tomorrow, followed by a massive series with the first place Giants the next day.
