September 12, 1908: 12th inning grand slam gives the Cubs their 6th straight. Also, stop being fat

It wasn't the cakewalk of the past couple games, instead the Cubs pulled out a thrilling 12 inning, come from behind victory for a 7-3 win over the Cardinals.

Things were back and forth all day. The Cardinals drew first blood, scoring a run in the bottom of the first and another in the second. Just that quickly, Cubs starter Andy Coakley was yanked from the game and replaced with Big Ed Reulbach.

The Cubs then managed to tie the game up in the 4th when catcher Johnny Kling delivered a single to right with runners on first and third. Harry Steinfeldt easily scored from third, but then a throwing error by the right fielder Red Murray allowed Joe Tinker score all the way from first and even the score 2-2. (More on Kling to come ... today was definitely his day.)

The Cardinals then pulled ahead again in the 6th thanks in part to a throwing error by the normally defensively sound Johnny Evers. The score remained 3-2 until the top of the 9th when Evers managed to redeem himself a bit by leading off the inning with a bunt single. Frank Schulte then bunted him over to second, followed by a Solly Hofman single that sent Evers 90 feet away from tying the game.

Harry Steinfeldt stepped up to the plate and grounded a ball to second baseman Chappy Charles (love the name). Evers broke for home, Charles threw to the plate, but Little Johnny just barely slid under the throw for the tying run.

By the way, Chappy Charles had terrible hair ...

I use lots of mousse

Now to the top of the 12th where a single, a walk, and a fielder's choice allowed the Cubs to load the bases with nobody out and catcher Johnny Kling at the plate. Cardinals pitcher Johnny Lush had pitched a pretty solid game, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that he's going to get a little tired after pitching 11 innings.

His fatigue is our gain, because Johnny Kling absolutely crushed a ball to left field for a go-ahead grand slam, his third home run of the season. The Cardinals, likely demoralized, went down easily in the 12th and the Cubs picked up their 6th win in a row, this time in very exciting fashion.

It was all about Johnny Kling today, going 3-5 and adding five RBIs ...

In other news of the day, I just love me some vintage advertising ... especially when it insults you and calls you "fat and sloppy!"

Considering none of us have heard of the magical diet pill "Rengo," I'm guessing it didn't exactly deliver as advertising. Really this ad shows us two things ...

1) Nothing has really changed much in 108 years with shady diet pills.

2) "No Longer Any Excuse To Be Fat and Sloppy" is my new favorite ad slogan of all time. BAHAHAHA!!!

Anyway, the Cubs win sends them to 82-51 on the year. Yet again, the Giants and Pirates both won as well, so yet again the Cubs remain two games back in third place. The final game of the Cardinals series is tomorrow, followed by a trip to Boston to play three against the Doves.
