Hey remember yesterday when the Tribune acted like the world was coming to an end because the Cubs were one game out of first place? Yeah well 24 hours later they won a game while the Giants lost a doubleheader, and now the Cubs are in first again by a half game. Thanks for all the unnecessary panic and despair everyone!

Orval Overall fired a three hitter while striking out seven, leading the Cubs to a 5-1 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Meanwhile, the Giants dropped two games to Cincinnati, causing them to lose a game and a half in the standings, as well as their hold on first place.

The Dodgers actually scored first when John Hummel cracked a home run in the bottom of the first, but the Cubs answered with a run of their own in the top of the second on a single to center by Joe Tinker that scored Frank Chance, who reached after being hit by a pitch.

That hit by pitch was part of a very wild day by Brooklyn pitcher Nap Rucker, who gave up nine hits along with a staggering EIGHT walks and a hit by pitch. It's a wonder the Cubs didn't score more, as the score remained 1-1 until the 7th when the Cubs finally started to pull away. Two walks and a sac fly led to a run in that inning, followed by another run in the 8th and three in the 9th for the 5-1 final.

Joe Tinker was the offensive star of the day, going 3-5 with an RBI ...

"Give her the Tinker" sounds like something from UrbanDictionary.com

In other news, the owner of the St. Louis Cardinals dropped dead, and his death was attributed to getting over-excited about today's Cleveland-Washington game. Apparently Frank De Haas Robison was a part owner of the St. Louis Cardinals, but was also a huge Cleveland Naps fan, which was a team he had some ownership of in years past.

The Naps are currently in a fierce battle for the pennant in the American League with the Tigers, White Sox, and Browns all within a few games. On this day in 1908, Robison was home sick, but had people relaying play by play to him of the Cleveland-Washington game.

The score was knotted 1-1 in the 9th when the Naps pitcher imploded and gave up 5 runs and sent the Senators out to a 6-1 lead. According to accounts, Robison immediately "dropped the receiver from his hands and sank into a stupor from which he never rallied."

So that's right kids ... baseball KILLS!

In summary, the Cubs win puts them at 91-54 for the year, and a half game ahead of the Giants for the National League lead. The Cubs play two against Brooklyn tomorrow, and you'll definitely want to come back to read about it because a Cubs pitcher will do something that has NEVER been done again since that day. Ever.

See you there!
